With a diet that varies greatly, their more popular diet consisting of rabbits, mice, insects, and berries. But includes deer (fawns, yearlings). Cattle (calves), prairie dogs. ground hogs, and FOX. And in the coldest, harsh months of winter when food is scarce they will also eat the droppings of cattle and horses for the undigested oats, grass, etc. And lets not forget the sheep.
Coyotes are opportunists to the extreme. Any time a prospective meal presents itself it will act.
Unless it has just eaten.
On many occasions coyotes have also been known to attack small children, and even adults. I have found and published many articles in past where small children were attacked by small packs of coyotes, and on one occasion a young adult was attacked and died from the intensity of the attack. Last year, here in my home town a pack of 3 coyotes were reported to approach a mans house, came onto his patio (with him sitting their) and attacked and ran off with his small dog. one ran off, the other two tore his dog in half, and ate it right in front of him.
Coyotes will also attack a calving cow while trying to give birth in attempt to eat the newborn calf. Tearing the mother to pieces. And do same to sheep. They will hang around a heard of cattle during calving time of year waiting. and will also eat the remains of birth. (after birth).
